Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd. is an Indian motion picture production and distribution company, based in Mumbai. The company was founded by Yash Johar in 1976. It is now headed by his son Karan Johar after the death of the former in 2004.
Sahil Khan Is Creative Head and balaji telefilms Dharma Productions and NDTV recently decided to jointly launch an entertainment television channel called NDTV Imagine.
On 12 May 2009 Philadelphia Daily News released an article stating Dharma Productions was faced with a lawsuit over unpaid wages for local Philadelphia actors and vendors to the sum of US $150,000. The actors and vendors were a part of the cast of the Rensil D'Silva directed film Kurbaan, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The lawsuit also included a restraining order preventing footage shot in the United States for the film, to be restricted from leaving the country. Dharma claims that it is not responsible for the claims they are being sued for, since the claims are between the individual actors and vendors and Melbourne based Swish Group Limited, a company Dharma hired to supervise the production of the film. In good faith, even though Dharma is not legally responsible for the loss of wages for the actors and vendors, Karan Johar and his team have begun to reimburse claimants of their losses, and plans to take further action against Swish Group Limited as to what happened to the original funds that were paid to Swish to compensate each worker their wages.
